About the Marina

This is a convenient service boatyard/marina up the River Arun in Littlehampton which can accommodate around 50 vessels up to 36m LOA with a draft of 3.5m. The yard (which was formerly occupied by David Hillyard Limited)was established more than a 100 years ago and over the generations its produced a comprehensive range of services and facilities which include the building, refitting and repairing of boats and engines. Despite its restricted access, the marina is just a few hundred yards from the sea and the recently developed harbour side. The site is also conveniently situated adjacent to the footbridge leading directly into Littlehampton Town Centre with all of its restaurants and shopping ameneties and is only 5 minutes walk from the train station which provides a direct link to London Victoria. Being mid way between Brighton an Chichester, Littlehampton provides a convenient stopover for yachts going east a or west bound along the coast.

Marina Approaches

The River Arun is protected by a bar across its entrance which dries to 0.7m and therefore restricts the access to ±3hrs HW for a vessel with a 1.5m draft. In strong SE winds, the entrance becomes dangerous with a considerable swell running up the river. There is a training wall, which stretches out to the south and crudely follows the line of the East Pier and gradually curves away to the East. It covers at half tide, however it is marked by several perches. The gap between the East Training Wall and the West Pier is narrow and at the end of the West Pier is a tide gauge whose indicted depths are referenced to chart datum which means one has to subtract 0.7 from the indicated depth.

At night, the narrow channel is navigated by using the leading lights, bearing 346°, front light; FG on black column at end of East Pier, rear light: Light House Occ.WY.7.5s at the root of the East Pier.
