About the Marina

Birdham Pool with its picturesque rustic charm claims to be oldest purpose built marina in the country. Originally it was one of the last tidal mill pools in Sussex until it was developed in to a marina in the 1930’s and the Old Mill building with its associated lock still stands today. The marina is situated a good 6 miles from the Chichester Harbour entrance in an area known as the Chichester Lake and the there’s a lock gate into the marina to negotiate as well. The berthing arrangements in the marina are mostly between piles, bows-on or stern-to the shore or jetties, however pontoon berths are available for larger vessels on the northern end of the pool. The marina is delightfully unsophisticated and peaceful with no modern buildings to spoil its character.
Note that in addition to the daily berthing rate for visitors inthe marina there is a Chichester Harbour Conservancy fee of £2 per day.

Marina Approaches

Past Itchenor the water shallows rapidly up the Chichester Channel and the marina entrance is through the old Chichester Canal cut and is marked by a line of starboard hand piles. Tidal gauges have been installed to the seaward side of the lock and the first of our channel piles showing the height of water over the lock sill. Normally, access through the lock is available three hours either side of high water Portsmouth and during daylight hours.
