About the Marina

Whitby is the only natural harbour between the Tees and the Humber and the marina is extremely well sheltered almost a mile up the River Esk which bisects this attractive Victorian Town. Whitby is famed for its Abbey which acts as a highly conspicuous landmark from the sea, but perhaps most of all Whitby is famed for once being the residential home of Captain James Cook and a memorial museum stands in tribute to this famous explorer. The port is also close to the North York Moors National Park which attracts many visitors to its stunning scenery and wildlife.

Ashore you'll find all the usual services and amenities of a small busy fishing town.

Marina Approaches

The approaches to Whitby harbour are safe from any direction except from the SE. From this direction Whitby Rock Buoy must be rounded and kept well to port. At the Rock Buoy - 3/4 of a mile from the mouth of the harbour - the tide turns 2.5hrs after HW or LW. On approaching the piers, care should be taken as a strong set to the east will be experienced across the entrance during the two hours before HW. The leading marks should now be visible, consisting of a white triangle for the lower mark and a white circle with a black vertical line for the upper mark (unlit). Sited on the east side of the harbour, these give the channel in from the sea on a bearing 169°T. This course should be held until two similar leading marks on the East Pier are observed carrying fixed amber lights. The course now changes to 029°T, bring the second set of marks into line astern. The marina is upstream of the swing bridge which opens on request (VHF Ch11) each half hour for two hours either side of HW.
