About the Marina

It's a long 15Nm trek from the open sea to the Preston Marina, but a very rewarding one it is amongst the rich wild life and the interesting open scenery of the River Ribble. The marina is located in the old Albert Edward Lock, built in 1892, it covers 40 acres and is the largest dock of its kind in Europe. Currently the 125 berth marina is taking up only a fraction of the lock’s capacity and ultimately they’ll be provision for 350 fully serviced pontoon berths. With the new comprehensive ‘Riversway Docklands’ development there’s a restaurant which compliments the marina and just off-site there’s a large supermarket, fast food outlet and a cinema. The marina is almost within the centre of Preston itself, one of England’s newest cities in the heart of Lancashire. With its large University and student population, there's a wide and vibrant choice of places to meet, dine and entertain with many theatres providing year-round performances.

Marina Approaches

The 15Nm of pilotage up the River Ribble is best obtained by using this link and once you’ve made the entrance of the marina lock gates there’s a waiting pontoon on the starboard side of the lock entrance. There a three gates to negotiate before reaching the marina. Yachts should listen out on VHF Ch 14 ‘Riversway’ ±2hrs HW for information regarding lock-gate operation, and VHF Ch 37 during business hours for information on marina berthing.

The outer storm gates are operated 1.5hrs HW Liverpool between 7am and 9pm during the summer, and anytime during the winter with 24 hrs notice. The Storm gate traffic signals are:
