About the Marina

Glasson Marina lies on the River Lune, west of Sunderland Point, and is where the Lancaster Canal meets the sea. Until recently the marina was privately owned for some 40 years, adn the business has now been aquired by the British Waterways Marinas. Although past its hey day, Glasson Dock is a working sea port and the 250 berth marina is located in the inner fresh water basin. The railway line that once connected the docks to the rail entwork is dismantled, now forming part of the Lanchashire Coastal Pathway and National Cycleway. Both the canal and estuary are rich with wildlife and many of the walks afford great views accorss Morcombe Bay stretching to the fells of the Lake District. The marina is really a working boat yard providing many specialist services which include: ocmossis treatment, riggers, paint spraying booths, repairs and insurance work. The village of Glasson is within walking distance and has a handful of pubs and restaurnats, plus a speciality food shop. A visit to Lancaster on the canal’s water bus is very worthwhile, as well as the Fleetwood Museum and the Blackpool Sealife Centre. The marina is popular stopping off point for yachtsmen sailing to and from Scotlnad and its a good spring board for the Isle of Man.

Marina Approaches

All yachts bound for the marina should aim to be at the River Lune No.1 west cardinal buoy no later than -1.5hrs HW (Liverpool). During the sumer season the outer lock gates are only open when HW falls between sunrise and sunset. During the winter, the same opening times apply, but 24 hrs notice is required to the lcok keeper. small craft may share the outer lock with larger commercial vesels. The lock gates between the outer basin and the marina basin are operated by British Waterways. The port and its pilot boats work on VHF Ch 69. Port personnel are normally on standby from 1 to 2 hours before HW. beware that the flood tides in the River Lune are strong, reaching 5kts on springs.
