About the Marina

Out of all the main London marinas, South Dock is the only one located on the south bank of the River Thames. The Southwark Council owns and runs this marina which is very pleasant and quiet, however it is looking tired and in need of investment. Of the 200 or so berths in the marina, most are taken up by liveaboards so the toilet and washing facilities get a lot more use than normal. Despite its solitary outlook on the outskirts of London it has surprisingly good transport links to the city centre as the underground, bus and ferry services are all close at hand. The Surrey Dock retail centre is a 10 minute walk away from the marina and is located at the western end of the vast Greenland Dock and there are several good restaurants close by as well.

Marina Approaches

The most obvious landmark to use for locating the marina the Baltic Quay building with its very distinctive row of five curved roof tops. Right outside the marina lock entrance on the starboard side is Greenland Pier which is rather tempting to use as a waiting pontoon. However this is positively discouraged - even if you tied up on the inshore side of it - since the pier is regularly used by the fast ferry buses that ply up and down the River. Visitors are asked to use the barge which stands off the river bank just south of the lock entrance- this barge has no walk ashore facility. The marina requests that all visitors should call the marina office on VHF Ch37, cal sign ‘South Dock Marina’ 30 mins in advance of arrival.
