About the Marina

Poplar marina is run by British Waterways Marinas and its the only marina inside the West India Docks. Regrettably, Poplar's overall message is that it doesn’t welcome visitors, and partly with good reason since access to the marina involves passing through three bridges which can no longer be raised during business hours. Instead, visitors are directed towards the West India Moorings along the south wall of the West India Dock. Even here though, single visiting craft are not welcome. British Waterways who operate these moorings prefers to provide club or group visits as their ‘unique selling point’.

The attraction for groups and club rallies is obvious to the eye with a whole host of specialist shops, restaurants, pubs and attractions on the thriving Canary Wharf Estate, and central London is just minutes away on the Jubilee Line and the Docklands Light Railway.

Marina Approaches

Entrance to the Marina is via West India Dock Lock, identified by a conspicuous blue lifting bridge. The lock is operated by British Waterways Docklands on VHF Ch13 call sign 'West India'. All lockings must be booked at least 24 hours in advance. Weekend bookings must be made before 12.00 Friday. Berth holders are entitled to a free locking, available ±1hr HW, between the hours 07:00 and 17:00. Other locking times may be available but will be subject to a charge.
