About the Marina

About 500m downstream of the Woolwich Ferry is the Gallions Point Marina. The marina is just inside the lock entrance to the Royal Victoria & Albert and King George V Docks, better known today as London Docklands and home to the ExCeL Exhibition Centre. Naturally the marina has good road access to the M25 and fast rail links to the centre of London. In addition, the marina is conveniently close to the London City Airport which has routes to most of the major cities in Europe. Consequently, as one can imagine, it can be noisy here during the daytime, except for a brief spell of peace from noon Saturday to noon Sunday when all air traffic is suspended. The marina is a popular stopover for those coming downstream from the upper reaches of the Thames, and waiting for the next convenient tide. Be mindful that no advanced bookings are taken here.

Marina Approaches

The entrance to the marina is not immediately obvious and is best located by a box shaped red bricked building marked ‘Royal Docks Campus’ in large uppercase letters. At low tide the water can get shallow south of the entrance and prompt arrival is essential since there are no waiting berths for the lock gates. If the Thames Barrier is closed for whatever reason, then the marina will close its own flood gate since this operates automatically in symmetry with the Thames Barrier.
